You Oughta Be in Pixels

Blog Azeroth's shared topic this week is to write your blogging “autobiography.”

This is a format I've always had trouble with—see how I handily skipped it in my introduction post. But I'll give it a try here.

I began playing World of Warcraft, very literally, in the wake of a hurricane. Hurricane Ike tore through Houston in September of 2008, leaving millions of people without power for over a week. I was one of them. Somehow, through the tom-tom drums or suchlike, I heard that two friends had power, and descended on them for succor.

Understandably at a loss as to how to entertain someone for hours on end without the use of World of Warcraft, they soon had me hooked up, against minor resistance, with a trial account. The next day, they took me to one of the few retailers in Houston that was open, a Best Buy (why was that open???), and bought me the Battle Chest.

From the moment I first realized that little Billy Maclure wasn't going to hand over that necklace just because I was Britomart, the paladin, I was (enraged) hooked. Soon Velleda the night elf druid followed. Then, slowly, a whole host of others.

But WoW was always my dirty little secret, something I couldn't share with others in my profession, beyond the occasional casual mention that always drew consternation and incredulous looks. So any thoughts I had, any ideas, any fits of rage were kept to myself or my sympathetic friends.

Finally, I realized that I wanted to write about WoW, and I wanted to share what I wrote with others. And therefore, this blog began. Er, last week. And here we are. It's already been a rewarding experience, challenging myself to look at Azeroth from a more critical perspective, and finding new things to share with others.

  1. Yay! I'm a new blogger too. And, I can definitely relate to being "in the closet" about my gaming. :) I look forward to reading more posts.

  2. Thanks so much for commenting! It's really exciting to have a space where folks are interested in hearing what I have to say about WoW instead of wondering why I'm not working instead...

  3. I really enjoy your way of writing. Subscribed to your blog in my reader ^^

And yes I can't really share wow with anyone at work. There are a few people but they aren't as passionate about it as me. Thankfully a blog and a blogging community can help that :D

  4. Thanks so much, antlergirl! You're right that, with this being a virtual community, most of our best interactions come from online. But I do sometimes wish I could throw out a few raiding references or whatever to my colleagues without getting the stinkeye!

  5. Seems there are a lot of us closet WOW players. I'm starting a blog too though brainstorming a starting point like autobiography. No one I know where I work etc plays WOW so it's hard to get all my chatter out without filling the guild's facebook page with my blurbs and Twitter followers lol.. Anyway, awsome stuff, cant wait to read more!

  6. Yes, my guild forums also tend to hear a lot out of me. I suppose this is one way of easing the strain on them!
